Traditional Thanksgiving Menu

There is one traditional Thanksgiving menu that many of us think of when planning or anticipating this holiday meal.

Traditional Thanksgiving Menu For some, this annual event requires us to pull out our Thanksgiving dinner recipes for:

  • Roast Turkey: We have heard that this was what the Pilgrims ate on that first Thanksgiving and it continues to be what many of us want on our table as well.
  • Stuffing: Whether it's bread stuffing or cornbread stuffing, what goes inside the turkey can be just as important to our meal as the bird itself.
  • Mashed Potatoes and gravy: Potatoes are one of the most consumed foods worldwide. What would a traditional Thanksgiving menu be without them. Add the gravy and you have met a basic need!
  • A Vegetable: Corn was introduced to the Pilgrims by their Native American neighbors and we still think it is a good choice. Green bean casserole seems to have taken over in some families however their are lots of good choices.
  • Cranberry Sauce: Cranberries grew wild in the New World and are a traditional side dish for most Thanksgiving tables.
  • Bread or Biscuits: Cornbread or corn muffins are popular as are dinner rolls. Here in Minnesota many of us include Scandinavian potato lefse on our Thanksgiving table.
  • Pumpkin Pie: The perfect finish to a traditional Thanksgiving menu. Other favorites are apple pie, cherry pie, pecan pie or chocolate pie for those who feel any meal requires a choclolate finish. Another Thanksgivng dessert idea might be a pumpkin cheesecake

Find recipes for all of the above and many other recipes for your traditional Thanksgiving menu.

Traditional Thanksgiving Menu Southern Style

In the south, a traditional Thanksgiving menu will likely include some variations on, and additions to, the menu in the list above.

Herb Roasted Turkey
Southern Cornbread & Oyster Dressing
Cranberry-Orange Relish
Ambrosia Salad
Candied Yams with Bourbon
Sweet Potatos
Southern-style Biscuits
Sour Cream Coconut Cake
Pumpkin Cheesecake

A Thanksgiving Dinner Menu for Two

A turkey breast is a great choice for smaller families. If everyone in your family likes white meat, problem solved! Adding cranberries to the stuffing eliminates one of the side dishes. And the dessert is one of my favorites; brownies topped with a pecan pie filling. Yum.

Turkey Breast with Cranberry Stuffing
Greens and Pear Salad
Creamy Potato Bake
Pecan Pie Brownies
