Scratch Art
Scratch art is an art form that requires the artist to work in reverse: filling in the light areas and highlights rather than the shadows and dark areas. Scratch boards are typically made by coating a board, usually masonite, with fine white china clay. The surface is then coated with an opaque black ink. A stylus or knife is used to scratch the black material from the surface of the scratchboard, revealing the white coating underneath.
