My mother loved making homemade toys for us when we were small. A photo of me at about one year of age shows me standing by a homemade rocking horse that she made using my grandpa's tools. She often made stuffed animals for us by drawing simple animal shapes on fabric, cutting out double layers, stitching the edges and stuffing the animals with bits of rags. I guess I inherited the addiction from her and made many homemade playthings for our kids as well.I'm pretty sure your experience with giving gifts to young children is similar to ours. They often give a passing look at the toy or game you have so carefully chosen then grab the box and ribbon and play with them instead! Making toys and games for the children in your life will save money and often bring them more joy than expensive, battery operated toys from a store. Plus you will have the satisfaction of creation. A great resource is Learn and Play the Recycle Way: Homemade Toys that Teach.
My grown children now come to me for ideas about homemade playdough recipes and toys and tips about how to make cheap or free playthings for their kids. It makes more sense than ever now when budgets are tight.
