Homemade Play Dough Recipe

Homemade playdough recipe I think I made this homemade play dough recipe a hundred or more times when my children were young.

Making homemade toys and play items is a creative outlet for mom and a delight for the baby or child who finds out that toys don't have to come from an expensive store.

There are now dozens of recipes for play dough that you can make at home.

Here is the basic play dough recipe I used most frequently. I'll share a few variations as well.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tbsp. powdered alum
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tbsp. cooking oil
  • A few drops of food coloring
Directions:

Dissolve the salt and alum in boiling water. Add food coloring, oil, and flour. Knead for 5 minutes or so. (It should feel smooth and not sticky). Store your homemade play dough in an air-tight container or zip-loc bag in the refrigerator. It will last for several months. We usually make at least two or three colors so the kids can unleash their creativity!

Homemade Play Dough Recipe for Cooked Play Dough:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp. cooking oil
  • 1 tsp. food coloring
Directions:

Combine all ingredients, except water and oil, in a saucepan. Gradually stir in the water mixed with oil. Add food coloring. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until a ball forms. Remove from heat, place dough on table and knead until smooth. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Most basic homemade play dough recipes are variations of these two: cooked or uncooked. Though the uncooked recipes requires boiling water so in a way amounts to a similar procedure.

Once the play dough mixture is ready, gather the kids at the table and watch their eyes sparkle! Add some plastic knives for them to cut the play dough, a few cookie cutters for making shapes and maybe some buttons, or other things they can use to decorate their creations.

They'll stay busy for hours!
