Homemade Edible Play Dough

Here are a bunch of homemade edible play dough recipes for those creative kids who want to have their play dough and eat it too!

These are great fun for a birthday party or family gathering where the children need something fun to do. Most of the time the grownups want to get involved as well.

Peanut Butter Play Dough

NOTE: Be sure none of the children in the group has a peanut allergy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 c. peanut butter
  • 1/2 c. honey
  • 1 1/2 c. powdered milk (or use powdered chocolate drink mix for a different flavor)

Directions:

Mix ingredients together. Form into balls and let the kids play with it or eat it as they choose. Let them have cookie cutters or safe utensils to cut shapes.

Another Peanut Butter Play Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

Place ingredients in a bowl and mix well with your hands. Dough should feel soft and pliable. Let children form into shapes or cut with cookie cutters.

Store any unused dough in an airtight container.

Add more fun and variety to your homemade edible play dough creations. Offer the children cereal, crushed graham cracker crumbs, M&Ms, chocolate chips, etc. to decorate their edible art.

If your child is a chocolate addict, she will be thrilled with this play dough recipe:

Chocolate Play Dough

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate or chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup plus one tablespoon light corn syrup
Directions:

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler. Stir the chocolate until smooth, then stir in the corn syrup. The chocolate will stiffen almost immediately but stir until completely combined.

Transfer the chocolate to a zip-loc bag and refrigerate until the consistency is like play dough. When firm, the dough can be kneaded. Make shapes, flowers, or whatever you and your child desire.

Here is another version:

Chocolate Clay

Ingredients:

  • 10 ounces chocolate or almond bark
  • 1/3 cup corn syrup
Directions:

Slowly melt and stir candy until it is smooth. Add syrup and blend thoroughly. Pour onto waxed paper. Spread mixture with your fingers until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Cover loosely with waxed paper and allow it to stiffen. This may take a couple of hours.

Play, eat, enjoy!

Here are a couple of other versions of homemade edible play dough:

Kool-Aid Play Dough

  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2-1/2 cups flour
  • 2 packages Kool-Aid (whatever color you would like to make)
  • 3 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 cups boiling water
Directions:

Mix dry ingredients, add oil then add the water. Knead until it is "play dough" consistency. Store in air tight container or plastic bags in the refrigerator.

  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
