Frugal savings has become a hot topic in today’s economic crunch. As finances are dwindling families are looking for ways to stretch their dollars to cover living expenses. We can learn a lot from looking back and considering how people saved money during the Great Depression. The budget saving ways that our mothers and grandmothers knew are still very much applicable today. When it comes to running a household, there are many simple things we can do that will add up to big savings in the long run. Though it may not sound practical in today’s disposable society, one of the most frugal ways to save money is by repairing broken items rather than replacing them. If something can be glued or painted or otherwise patched together, why not consider it rather than spending the extra money to replace it? Everything from small appliances to computers to clothing can be repurposed, and often for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. If you can sew up tears or holes in socks or pants, by all means do it. Don’t throw out those ratty old jeans, trim them down into trendy cut offs. Frugal savings isn’t about being miserly, it’s about being practical and these days who can’t afford that? Another area where there are many frugal ways to save money is grocery shopping. Some of the most expensive things we buy are cleaning items and they are also among the most unnecessary. As our grandmothers once told us, you can do just as much with a little vinegar and baking soda as you can with any expensive cleanser. There are many items you probably already have in your cupboard which you can put to use cleaning the house. Salt, for one, can figure into frugal savings big time as everything from a scouring agent to a natural medicine, gargled in warm water to cure sore throat or aching gums. Other natural products can be used to replace expensive skin care items, which can also take a big chunk of your grocery budget. Cucumber slices, honey, tomato and eggs can all be used to treat the skin. Honey also comes in handy for treating cuts. When it comes to health products, one of the most frugal ways to save money is just following the standard advice we’ve all heard…wash your hands and get plenty of rest. The more you can avoid germs, the more you can avoid spending money on medicines and doctor’s visits to treat illness. And another key area for frugal savings in your household is energy use. Turn off lights when you’re not using them. Dry clothes on drying racks instead of running the electric dryer. Limit heating and air conditioning to certain rooms to cut down on your utility bill. All of these steps can reduce utility costs and help you save money. Money is tight for all of us these days and that means rethinking how you spend and considering taking a step back to tried and true methods for saving. They may seem quaint and old fashioned, but the tips our parents and grandparents passed onto us can go a long way toward helping us stretch our hard earned dollars today.
