Frugal meal planning begins with your shopping list.

  • Plan your menus around the sales. Check the grocery ads before you shop. Cut out any coupons you can use. Be willing to go to more than one store and stick to buying only the sale items. Buy as many of the sale items as you can afford and stockpile for future use.
  • Shop for basic ingredients. Though it is tempting, skip ready-made meals and convenience foods. It often takes only a few minutes longer to prepare your frugal meals than it would take to heat up a frozen dinner.
  • Create a list of frugal foods that you will purchase whenever they are on sale.
  • Start a new recipe file for your new way of shopping and eating healthy yet frugal meals.

  • Break the "brand name" habit. Buy store brands, generic brands and less well known brands.
  • Buy in bulk. Cook in bulk as well. Make a double batch of an item and freeze a portion. You now have a meal to "heat-and-eat" on a day when you are too busy (or tired) to cook.
  • Buy fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season and learn to preserve them for when they are not available.
