Benefits of a Healthy Diet For Life
The benefits of a healthy diet are numerous. From the time of conception and childhood until old age, the old saying that “we are what we eat” is true. But, what makes a healthy diet? How does a parent choose the right foods for their kids and for themselves? Here are just a few suggestions.
Forget About “Kid Friendly” Meals
The idea that kids won’t eat certain foods is simply untrue. Just like adults, they will pick the foods that they prefer, which could lead to nutritional deficiencies at any age. It could also lead to future health problems if they choose the wrong foods.
As we continue to learn more about the benefits of a healthy diet, we also learn more about the risks of junk food. Not only is junk food lacking in nutrients and high in calories, it also contributes to heart disease, increases your risk of type II diabetes and even causes wrinkles. Do a little reading about “advanced glycation end-products” and you’ll see what I mean.
Here’s what makes a healthy diet: good protein sources, complex carbohydrates and good fats. These are covered in a little more detail below.
Avoid the Box and the Drive-Through
For the most part, processed and fast foods are unhealthy. They are just one step above junk food. In some cases, they are junk food. While some fast food restaurants have made an effort to include healthier choices on their menus, they still specialize in cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets.
Here’s what makes a healthy diet if you are pressed for time, like most of us are these days. This is a simple one-day menu that can be used, modified, and enjoyed by kids or adults to help the entire family enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet.
- Oatmeal, sweetened with honey or brown sugar, a serving of raisins, a handful of walnuts or pecans, a half cup of low-fat milk
- A piece of fresh fruit or a cup of berries, a serving of baby carrots
- One slice of whole grain bread, a serving of canned tuna or salmon, salad vegetables and another piece of fruit
- A serving each of broccoli and cauliflower, a tablespoon of olive oil-based dipping sauce or olive oil and vinegar salad dressing
- Baked or grilled chicken marinated in olive oil, garlic, cilantro or other spices, a half cup of wild rice and black beans, more veggies and fruit for dessert
As you are able to see, what makes a healthy diet is “real” food. The benefits of a healthy diet like the one above could include a reduced risk of all kinds of age-related diseases and a longer, healthier life.
Begin by making the substitutions that your family will accept and you will be on the road to a healthy diet for all.
