Looking For Some Advice From Mom?
I was once asked: "If you had the opportunity, what advice would you give to the next generation?”
There is not, of course, a single or simple answer to that question. Everyone has a need for wisdom in some areas of life more than others. Typically those of us who are older are presumed to have advice and wisdom to offer to those who are younger. Many cultures seek the advice of their elders and honor the “wisdom of the ages.”
The older generations really do have much to share and teach.
Recently an enterprising person offered his advice from mom--his mom’s words of wisdom--for sale on ebay! This young man knew what many moms wish their grown children would acknowledge: Mom has a vast store of life experience, insight and knowledge that is worth tapping into.
Wisdom and advice, however, are not the exclusive property of those who have lived a long life. We all have particular gifts of knowledge and experience to offer to others. Everyone can use a little free advice from those who are "more experienced" in some of life's situations.
Some of what you will find on this site is my answer to that question. On the pages that follow, I offer my "advice from mom"--my perspectives, and some of what I have learned, so far, about many aspects of life. I will include some family stories and photos as well.
Other pages will include the wisdom and advice of others I respect and have learned from. As I share advice and resources, I look forward to hearing from you about what you are learning on this journey we are all on together. You will find a place on the contact page to share your thoughts and insights. I will read all of them and share some of them on the pages of this site.
I am a collector of beautiful words of wisdom. Here are a couple of my favorites:
Wisdom outweighs any wealth. ~Sophocles
There is a wisdom of the head, and... a wisdom of the heart. ~Charles Dickens
A number of surveys have been done that asked people what they most want that money couldn't buy. Here are some of the answers:
- Happiness
- Freedom
- Love
- Peace and tranquility
- Clean water and fresh air
- Time to do the things we really want to do
- Rekindle a long-lost friendship
- A world where children can grow up feeling safe
- The courage to say what I feel and what needs to be said
- Peace of mind
- To be surrounded by family and friends
Other studies have concluded that the best predictors of happiness are, in order, physical health, income, education and marital status. You will find information and resources, (and a lot of free advice!) on almost all of these topics.
To receive advice from mom by email, please add your name to the "Letter From Mom" newsletter and subscribe to my Wisdom of a Mom blog. I welcome your feedback and ideas about topics.
